Dai Fu Lou @ Esprit Friends

Saturday 22 August 2009 Dai Fu Lou had an interview at Esprit Friends and talked about a serious subject what is friends. Do you really have to know everything about the other person to be friends with. Or just knowing and feeling of a friendship is enough. Everyday you can make a new friend without knowing them at all, which might be better then if you knew all the information about them instead. Friends could be friend however between all of them there lies also people who tries to mislead you or people trying to be your friend to get something from you. Always make clear the difference between a friend and business, both can't happen at the same time. Jona talked about his past experience how he got hurt by a friend he trusted and came to Hong Kong with fully having trust in their friendship, having later known that he had a hidden 3 year plan for Jona with out him knowing it. Also in talked about how Jona and Alan met in Hong Kong and from totally not knowing about each other and still able to become friends and setup Dai Fu Lou. Watch the interview and vote for use here.

Please support Dai Fu Lou and vote for us, so Dai Fu Lou and exist and do more exhibition and finance our business. Also if we win we would like to give a shirt away to one of the voters, tell us if you have voted and tell friends, family and others to help voting.

Students Exhibition

Last sunday was the exhibition held by the student which we had taught about creativity and also how to setup an exhibition. We came to see if they actually listened to our tips and informations.
IMG_1165
It is a quite small exhibitions because there were only 4 teams or 4 school that have entered. Also was a kind of showoff by the school which have better students, by showing greater designs then others.
IMG_1146
This team (Polariod window blinds) kinda have listened, but still made a far too busy display and have the most to show then others, however I find that this team should been disqualified cause this project s not made by the students. During the exhibition was a guy / teacher who have allot to talk about this and actually sounded to me that he has invented this. Also on the table there are actually stuff from science class which there is no way those students could have bought at any local shop, also they have light sensors and everything that is either from the science class or that teacher had ordered.

Also their invention is made far to complex while a certain blinds or curtain would have work just well to, cause there invention has too many parts and too many moving things making it to have a far too high cost. Also there is a electric window blinds which can regulate the amount of lights that can shine through, however it is far to expensive to replace all the windows with and uses allot of chemicals to produce.

The display that they have made got a certain order to it however it annoying to have to turn your head from side to side to read each time cause they have placed all the text in a different angle each time. However it attract you to look at is but not to read it.
IMG_1148
This is the Dirty water electricity generator team, this has the most simplistic and cleaned display with everything printed and plastic with the numeral order. The display is good however I would have chosen for a normal foamboard instead of a polystyreen board with all the bubbles showing. On the prototype they should have used a smaller sheet of paper cause now the attention is too much drawn to the sheets and not actually to the prototype, also the prototype almost disappeared cause of the sheet of paper. However for the city to give money to place this in the building might be a far to big play, they might have better change it to a more of a consumer product or ad it with in a product. Like with in a washing machine where water flushes out the water could generate some electricity that is used to was the clothing with.
IMG_1153
Mama wake me up alarm clock team ( alarm clock that wakes you without sound but vibrates your cushion, this team is a pretty funny setup cause even though it exist of 4 students I can see it is basically made all by just one cause of his design and drawing style. This kid actually like to make things small instead of getting his hands dirty on project that they could not handle, cause the others made their project far to big while this project staying relatively small and more on consumer based then having to be financed by the city or government. However the text might be very small it is basically good, cause as if you would talk with a lower volume people would listen more carefully. Also love this working model which they basically moved the on and off switch of the vibrating machine to the alarm clock.
IMG_1149
Electric bus team, this team just got to many ideas but this is not an invention because they things they have summed up are basically already invented stuff and also basically are designed for this purpose. This team just got too many ideas but eventually as you can see the end result is either their budget or did not have enough time to make a good display. They just took few pieces of cardboard and just drew on it, however got to say they did well with the layout how they drew and wrote things on the board. But it looks too much like they ruffly made this and did not spend much time on making it at all. But basically replace or added stuff to the bus but did not do a full bus design on how the bus would look like, more data on how much energy it would use and how much less exhaust and more.
IMG_1156
These two are basically the better one during this exhibition, but the best for me is the alarm clock with the only one placing the display boxes not against the wall making it looks more like an actual exhibition feel and simple poster on the wall, however there is one thing it is showing of their school a bit too much though. However it does fill and attract some more attention then the electric generator.

Eventual each team gets a certificate for attending this exhibition and creativity lesson.
IMG_1155
And the better team would get som lego, to play out some of their creativity.
IMG_1180
However I doubt most of them actually still do play with Lego most be playing computer games instead.
IMG_1169
I bet that this panda would agree with me that his alarm clock is the best and the kid who design this have a very bright future if he want to get into the design world.

Dai Fu Lou Teaching Students about Creativity

Friday we had a small creativity lesson teaching students from age from 10 to 17 how to be creative and how they should prepare for a exhibition, mostly cause most of them have never seen a exhibition before or let alone know how to make one.
IMG_0988
IMG_0990
Vanessa, Alan and Jona are all creative in different field of design could easily explain and help them out with certain problems and things. The main theme of the exhibition these students are designing for is Building something for this city. As for the big difference between the Hong Kong and Europe we also have a different perspective on the already made project that we done by these students. Mainly the students all designed innovations, however many of them made it too complicated for them selves compared to others, while some just did not do the full research.
IMG_0999
We came there actually without knowing how many students would be there or actually knowing what they all have designed. So we had few presentations of the student showing us their made project and we gave feedback on the pros and cons of them. Actually most of them aren't that well thought of plus they aimed at a much to big of project that would have summed up allot of data and statistics that need to be shown. While between it all there is one great design made by the youngest kid of the whole group who is working alone today cause his partner could not be there.
IMG_1056
The boy here is front is the small talent, I am sure this kid would become one amazing designer in the future also could see some aspect of myself in him cause he also like to draw very very small. But he is actually the only one who has made an actual consumer product instead of things that the government would look at or could buy and would have cost millions to invest in. This kid just made a simple alarm clock that would wake you up by making your cushion vibrate, so it would not wake up others in the same house or the neighbors. In Hong Kong there are not much space and people live stacked on top of each other and in pretty cramp places and Hong Kong is also allot of 24 hours businesses and allot of people sleep and wake up at different times. Also he was one of the teams who have a working prototype with them.
IMG_1108
The other team made an electric water scoop generator which a real energy meter to show how it produces energy. However this generator will be driven by the flushed or dirty water that are produced daily in the many tall buildings however the main problem is that the water is dirty and could clog up the scoop and may need allot of maintenance. This might have been easy if they just designed a scoop which would generate more power then normal ones cause of somethings special, however now placing in a building they made it much to hard for them selves, cause now they need to get informations from architectures about how the water moves within building and many more problems with maintaining it.
IMG_1039
We did few exercise to see the skills of the students, we let them design a logo for their invention and posters and see how they made it and talked about what is good and bad about them.
IMG_1050
Sunday 3rd of May there will be an exhibition held by these students and will see then if they have learned and listened to use cause we have given the information that they have needed. The exhibition is held at Cattle Depot, 63 Ma Tou Kwok Road, To Kwan Wan, Kowloon.
IMG_1110
And here are some other snapshots made during the creativity lesson that we have given to these students.
